Introduction
Mechanical Engineering is a basic discipline supporting all other engineering specialties. It provides scientific and technological tools for the industrial development of the country and the regional society. In addition to its primary functions, the mechanical engineering is widely applicable to the design and manufacturing processes. The core subjects encompassed in the mechanical engineering curriculum are thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid state mechanics, and their applications such as fluid machinery, internal combustion engines, refrigeration and air conditioning, thermal conductors, automotive engineering, workshop practice, vibration engineering, oil hydraulics, and system design, mechanical component design, computer applied design (CAD/CAM) covering these applied areas of mechanical engineering. The majors curriculum is designed to train the professional mechanical engineers to meet the needs of a variety of governmental, industrial and educational organizations and their relevant programs. In addition, the majors specialists are nurtured to meet the basic disciplinary support for the development of environmentally sustainable energy, biotechnology, space technology and other cutting-edge technologies.
Aims
1.[Specialty] cultivating the engineers equipped with the technical knowledge and expertise
- Foster the individuals capable of applying the concepts of mathematics, basic and engineering sciences
- Enhance the skills of applying the specialized mechanical engineering concepts
2.[Practical application/Executive practice/International mindedness] nurturing the engineers meeting the needs of the future technology in the rapidly changing market economy
- Train the mechanical engineers who understand the nature of any relevant problems and creatively solve them
- Nurture the capability to design innovative technical systems and/or processes
- Develop the leadership in interdisciplinary and convergent teamwork based on effective communication skills
3.[Professional ethics] educating the engineers considerate of people and organizations
- Develop the skills to use the applicable technology, methods, cutting-edge tools and information technology
- Nurture the capability to understand and analyse the mechanical engineering data and design blueprints
- Foster the enthusiasm for self development through continuing education efforts
Careers
Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Majors are employed in such diverse areas as machine design and production management, mechanical equipment and facilities (development, manufacturing), automobiles, aircraft, energy use and management. Those who complete the maritime industry courses are eligible to work as maritime police, oceanographic and fishing vessels, naval staff and officers, ship inspection, maritime traffic surveillance control centers (VTS), Korea Register of Shipping (KR), trade and cruise ship engineers, and other technical professions. One also goes on to further study in graduate schools here at home or abroad for an eventual career in academic, government, industry or private sectors
