Introduction
The department offers four principal majors curricula inKorean Language(lexicology, semantics, pragmatics, phonemics, and grammars),Classical Literature(Korean classical poetry, classical essays), andKorean Language Education,all of which are taught through theoretical studies and practical tools applicable later to the majors’ teaching profession.
The department also maintains both the departmental library of more than 3,000 language related books and the web site (http://koredu.cheju.ac.kr) which provides a variety of instructional materials. The majors students run the study groups on their own and are prepared for employment through special jobs briefing sessions.
Departmental events complementing the formal curricula
(1) All Province Secondary School Literary Contest: Held on the occasion of the Hangeul Proclamation Day, October 9. Contestants are secondary school students. The nationally well-recognized and oldest event is in its 60th year of operation this year.
(2) Jobs Special Lectureship: Held during summer annually nationwide to sustain the highest success rate achieved in employment related screening tests. Subjects of the lectureship are Korean language, modern literature (poetry, novel), classical literature (novel, poetry), Korean language education, teaching methods and tools.
(3) Study groups: Classical literature education, modern literature education, Korean languaged education, and Korean linguistics education. Self-managed study groups.
Aims
The Department of Korean Language Education teaches the majors students the Korean language education subjects widely covering specialized topics to cultivate the able teachers for the education of secondary school students. Ultimately, the departmental program aims at nurturing the Korean language teachers with the basic understanding of the structure and use of our language capable of in-depth analysisofand perceptive insightintothe classic works of creative writings.
Careers
Graduates of the Department of Korean Language Education find their teaching careers with junior high schools. Some of them go on to further study in graduate schools here at home or abroad for eventual careers as university faculty and staff or with research institutes. A variety of other professions open to the graduates are education related industries, broadcast and newspaper journalists, production directors, broadcast writers, and publishers.
