Introduction
The newly established Department of Music Education in the College of Education began producing the music teachers for junior high schools in 1981. It was reorganized as the Department of Music Education in the College of Humanities in 1987 and the program continued not only for training the skilled musicians, but also for promoting the artistic interest of the regional community and globalizing activities until 2008. In response to an increasing demand of the regional society for cultural arts, the Department separated from the College of Humanities in 2009 and the Faculty of Music emerged with the newly established College of Arts and Design in 2012.
The Faculty of Music plays a leading role in various regional musical events such as experimental stages through which the pool of music loving public expands and the direction where the regional society’s music is headed can be suggested.
The educational program of the Faculty of Music offers both theories and performances in all areas of music. To produce well-educated musicians, the theory part covers history, philosophy, structure and analysis of sound and others that are essential and available at other major university music departments. In particular, the performance part focuses on enhancing the sensibility and technique of recitals through a one-on-one student to teacher paired training in five majors areas including composition, vocal, piano, and orchestral (wind and string) music.
For better basic understanding of the traditional Korean music, introductory Korean classical music and recitals will be established, thus broadly educating the students in both occidental and oriental music, while musical specialties are emphasized.
For training the skilled performing musicians, in addition to the balanced theory and laboratory education, recitals are included in the curriculum for each student to acquire the sensibility in stage performance this starts at the sophomore level.
A Masters program involving diverse research activities was established in the Graduate School of Education in 1997. To train the specialized musicians, the MA degree courses were opened in the university-wide Graduate School in 2005.
Aims
The program aims not only at teaching technical skills in the performing music, but also at promoting the emotional maturity through music as well as training qualified music teachers. While the program’s goal is to contribute to the arts activities of the regional community, it also aims to globalize the musical activities. The Faculty of Music is dedicated to play a leading role in furthering the musical creativity and activating the artistic sensibility of citizens.
Careers
Recognition of a specialty musician comes with a completion of the required courses. It offers a variety of opportunities as a performing artist at musical and institutional organizations. Also, employment at a broadcast or journalistic establishment in charge of the music program
may also open up for a music major. A teaching job is available at various schools. One can also opt for an advanced research overseas or at a graduate school in Korea. There are many other positions for which a music graduate is well qualified for employment.
