As the word of the Jeju language "ggakrok" shows, the deer maintains a close relationship with Jeju Island, which instinctively lives deep in the mountains, feeding only on medicinal herbs. In history and tales, the animal is characterized as being gentle in temperament, but sturdy in spirit, appearing as a complex symbol of royal authority and sacrifice. The deer was selected as a symbol of our university in 1983, in a sense that, just like the deer, the members of Jeju National University should devote themselves to accumulating necessary knowledge for a lifetime, as well as to dedicate themselves to the development of the nation and local community as being gentle in temperament, but sturdy in spirit.

A nutmeg tree, well known for its majestic and elegant appearance, lives for up to 500 years and never loses its greenness, irrespective of the season or the temperature. A nutmeg tree is a symbol of ceaseless pursuit of "truth" and undaunted commitment to "justice." The wood is soft yet firm, and its beauty makes it a precious material. The tree grows vigorously and thrives in various environments. Nutmeg trees, which come in two varieties ？ male and female trees, bloom differently from other trees and produce edible fruits with unique tastes and valuable medical properties. The tree represents human ethical values and the concept of devotion to the welfare of mankind. It was designated as the symbolic tree in April 1982, shortly after the Jeju National University was officially promoted to a university.

The Jeju National University's UI, newly established in January 2009, represents the challenging spirit of the university soaring toward the future and the world. The shield-like letter [U], connecting the initial of the letter [J] of Jeju and the figure of a torch symbolizing justice, all emblematize Jeju National University. The book and the torch collectively embody the core values of Jeju National University’s foundation: truth, justice, and creation. The founding year is also indicated to reflect the university's tradition and authority. The wave, the emblem of oreum (Jeju Island’s symbolic volcanic cones) and the ocean that surrounds Jeju Island represent the forward-looking members of the university.

The symbol is the most important element that forms Jeju National University's identity as a comprehensive visual representation of the university. This symbol mark is redesigned based on the concept which contains the preservation of tradition and the pursuit of globalization through correcting figurative imperfection and improving issues with the representation of the university logo in the existing symbol mark.

Jeju National University's character is designed to present the university's image more effectively and is developed to be adaptable to various application items based on function and purpose. The university's symbol, the "deer," is characterized to form an emotional connection, both in and out of the university.
