Introduction
The principal objective of the biology education majors is to cultivate the talented teachers of specialized expertise based on the balanced study of diverse areas of biology through rational and scientific way of thinking and having well-rounded personal quality dedicated to biology teaching. The majors students are also taught the newly developed theories so that they acquire the imaginative and practical skills to solve problems that may arise in the professional field of teaching and research.
To implement the majors program, not only all areas of biology but also necessary subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, earth science, science education are included in the majors curriculum. In achieving the better understanding of the biological realm ranging from cellular to organismic levels, the theoretical and experimental approaches are used to equip the majors with the ability to do in-depth analysis and research on life phenomena. We also encourage the majors students to learn about the use of laboratory tools and equipment inducing them to perform experiments on their own, as such practices help them becoming creative teachers in secondary schools.
In order to respond to the continuing changes calling for curriculum reform, we have started implementing the joint curricular programs with the physics education majors for the students to take the disciplinary convergence program, which broadens the prospects of their future careers as teachers and researchers with double majors. To complement the curricular program, we have also established the collaborative relationships with Center for Science Gifted Education and Education, Science and Research Institute.
Aims
The biology education majors program aims at cultivating the biology education specialists capable of solving various issues of the secondary school biology teaching through critical analysis and practical insight based on the understanding of the recent development in biology education processes, teaching methods and tools, and the latest trends in the broad field of biology research. We also nurture the practically oriented specialists equipped with the ability to develop the effective biology learning program and to use multimedia facilities commensurate with the expectation of the information-oriented society and schools.
Careers
Graduates of the majors program earn 2nd degree teachers certificates for teaching biology and science at secondary schools in Jeju Province and nationwide. They may also opt for research careers with numerous biological and scientific research organizations in the country and abroad. One can go on to further study at a graduate school here at home or abroad earning graduate degrees and eventually finding careers in research institute or university.
