University/Graduate

The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The College of Applied Life Sciences has developed new theories in the fields of biotechnology, natural science, and social science, and applied them to the agricultural sector to improve productivity. Its ultimate goal is to educate specialists who contribute to the welfare of humanity. In 2004, the Ministry of Education appointed the college as the operator of its Project Management Center Cultivating Subtropical Agriculture and Animal Biotechnology Project Manpowers to develop customized educational programs and opportunities for the students to increase their experiences specializing in many different fields. In 2005, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs designated the college as a training institute for its ‘Track’ System that offers on-site educational programs to encourage agricultural entrepreneurship. In February 2006, the college was evaluated as an ‘excellent’ educational institute specializing in agriculture (by the Korea Council for University Education). Furthermore, the college has educated talented individuals by running the Subtropical and Tropical Organism Gene Bank funded by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, the Regional Research Center (RRC) funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the Export Promotion Research Organization for Korean Citrus funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs.

Introduction

As Biotechnology is expected to lead all the fields of agriculture, medicine, food, industry, and environment in the 21st century, on the basis of the developed condition, the Department of Applied Life Industry was established in 2003 for the purpose of studying high technologies of genetic technology and bio technology and was reorganized into the Major of Molecular Biotechnology of the Department of Biotechnology in 2005
Not only do we study profoundly the high technologies of bio informatics and functional dielectrics and the fields of applying those into crops such as plant genetic technology, crop molecular thremmatology, plant metabolic engineering, but we also study deeply into the primary and applied fields necessary for biotechnology such as molecular dielectrics, protein engineering, biotechnology license and gene identification.
In this way, on the basis of BT developing drastically recently, we analyze dielectric substances, find useful ones, substitute the single base, produce useful protein, apply those into plants and thereby create high value-added knowledge-based industry in the fields of agriculture, medicine, food, industry and environment. In addition, facing the age of keen competition in the 21st century, we focus on nurturing experts on biotechnology to lead the field with positive and creative thoughts and make efforts to train capable men to lead the bio technology, the national central industry and the propelling businesses as the proper guidance of Jeju aiming at a free international city.

Careers

The graduates interested in study can enter the graduate school of bio technology or graduate school of Dentistry or go abroad for study. Also, they can find their way into any industry and research centers relating to biotechnology. In addition, they can work in the National Institute of Scientific Investigation, National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology, Rural Development Administration, tangerine research institute, biotechnology research centers, chemistry research centers, ginseng research centers, food development research institutions, affiliated research centers of Environmental Agency, and other enterprises of medicine, seeds, chemistry, pesticide, food, health, and environment.

History

The establishment of the Department of Applied Life Industry in 2003
The reorganization into the Major of Molecular biotechnology of the Department of Biotechnology in 2005
The establishment of the Masters’ course of the graduate school in 1980
The establishment of the Major of Agricultural Chemistry of Doctors’ course in 1982
We aim to research into the applied technology and educate about the primary study, relating to the production and utilization of gardening plants such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers. In other words, we research and study not only the technology directly relating to the production and utilization of gardening plants, especially subtropic ones, but also supporting the primary study of environment and life science.
