The College of Applied Life Sciences has developed new theories in the fields of biotechnology, natural science, and social science, and applied them to the agricultural sector to improve productivity. Its ultimate goal is to educate specialists who contribute to the welfare of humanity. In 2004, the Ministry of Education appointed the college as the operator of its Project Management Center Cultivating Subtropical Agriculture and Animal Biotechnology Project Manpowers to develop customized educational programs and opportunities for the students to increase their experiences specializing in many different fields. In 2005, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs designated the college as a training institute for its ‘Track’ System that offers on-site educational programs to encourage agricultural entrepreneurship. In February 2006, the college was evaluated as an ‘excellent’ educational institute specializing in agriculture (by the Korea Council for University Education). Furthermore, the college has educated talented individuals by running the Subtropical and Tropical Organism Gene Bank funded by the Korea Science and Engineering Foundation, the Regional Research Center (RRC) funded by the National Research Foundation of Korea, and the Export Promotion Research Organization for Korean Citrus funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs.

Introduction

We aim to research into the applied technology and educate about the primary study, relating to the production and utilization of gardening plants such as fruits, vegetables, and flowers. In other words, we research and study not only the technology directly relating to the production and utilization of gardening plants, especially subtropic ones, but also supporting the primary study of environment and life science.

Careers

In addition to entering the graduate school, the graduates can work as researchers and instructors of the Agrarian Development Office, officer of Korea Agro-Fisheries Trade Corporation, plant quarantine officers, government officials, agriculture teachers, general enterprises and financial officers of agricultural corporative and tangerine agricultural corporative. There are many successful cases of gardening businesses and self-supporting agriculture using the special climate of Jeju.
