University/Graduate

The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The National Teachers College, which had educated nearly 5,900 primary educators since its foundation as the Temporary Educational Institute for Primary Educators in 1946, was reborn as the Teachers College of Jeju National University in March 2008.

Jeju National University has since become the first national university with an unrivaled educational institute capable of fostering both the primary and secondary educators. The national subsidies for the consolidation of the two institutes and plenty of incentives given for state-funded projects are reinvested to raise the quality of the educational programs.

The Teachers College will be renovated as the educational institute for the nation’s best-skilled primary teachers with expertise, manners, and passion through its unequaled facilities, systems, and curricula.

The fundamental goal of the Teachers College is to foster professional teachers with a broad understanding of the characteristics of elementary school students as well as a firm understanding of educational content and teaching methods. Furthermore, the Teachers College has concentrated on nurturing educators with a strong work ethic and passion based on the humanities and social manners, exemplary personalities, and an in-depth awareness of the dignity and values of a teaching post.

The Teachers College will make further contributions to the regional and national development by creating talented teachers with the community pride and global awareness that can lead the ‘glocalized’ 21st century.

Introduction

Pedagogy is an academic discipline systematically exploring the educational acts and phenomena present in the human society. The majors program strives for the articulation of goals and roles of the elementary education on the basis of the underlying subjects such as history, philosophy, society, culture, biology, psychology, public administration, management and diverse other concepts. To realize the educational goals at the teaching level, the curriculum calls for a stringent analysis of the educational processes and methods, and reexamines the resources for supporting various educational objectives of implementing the theoretical and practical elementary education program. While scholastic studies and research activities are encouraged, the majors program aims at upgrading the formal education for children through the development of appropriate pedagogical concepts and close interactions involving the future teachers of the majors program.

Aims

The Elementary Pedagogy Majors provides the curriculum encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in dealing with issues involving the elementary school education. Ultimately, the elementary pedagogy majors program aims at nurturing the talented elementary school teachers not only with pedagogic knowledge, but also having experience in teaching, consultancy and guidance of life, and innovative field work. The program also emphasizes for the prospective teachers to be knowledgeable about historical and philosophical implications in understanding the direction of Korean education in general. It is desirable for our elementary school education majors to understand the education administration and policy issues as well, so that they have both broad and balanced educational perspectives. Equipped with both analytical and decisive decision making abilities, the majors students interested in further study and research go on to further study in graduate schools for their master’s and/or doctorate degrees.

Careers

Having both the expertise and the ability to do research in elementary school education, the graduates are eligible to qualify as 2nd degree elementary school teachers (by taking the necessary teaching and essay tests). They are generally employed as teachers at national and private elementary schools. Further study at graduate schools is an alternative career option for those who are interested in educational research.
