University/Graduate

The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The National Teachers College, which had educated nearly 5,900 primary educators since its foundation as the Temporary Educational Institute for Primary Educators in 1946, was reborn as the Teachers College of Jeju National University in March 2008.

Jeju National University has since become the first national university with an unrivaled educational institute capable of fostering both the primary and secondary educators. The national subsidies for the consolidation of the two institutes and plenty of incentives given for state-funded projects are reinvested to raise the quality of the educational programs.

The Teachers College will be renovated as the educational institute for the nation’s best-skilled primary teachers with expertise, manners, and passion through its unequaled facilities, systems, and curricula.

The fundamental goal of the Teachers College is to foster professional teachers with a broad understanding of the characteristics of elementary school students as well as a firm understanding of educational content and teaching methods. Furthermore, the Teachers College has concentrated on nurturing educators with a strong work ethic and passion based on the humanities and social manners, exemplary personalities, and an in-depth awareness of the dignity and values of a teaching post.

The Teachers College will make further contributions to the regional and national development by creating talented teachers with the community pride and global awareness that can lead the ‘glocalized’ 21st century.

Introduction

Elementary Korean Language Majors is the most basic program for all formal education in elementary schools, as it provides the language skills needed in instructing a variety of subjects. Korean language is the common and compulsory subject in elementary, junior and senior high school curricula. Its education is essential for nurturing the ability and attitude, and its critical and imaginative use is particularly contributory in advancing the language and its culture. Through effective use of the language in the form of thematic addresses, essays, and creative writing works, a well-rounded individual the society calls for is nurtured, especially for the future-oriented world demanding individuals of interdisciplinary and convergence expertises. To enhance the leadership quality of elementary Korean language teachers, the majors curriculum offers courses in listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammars, literature, and Jeju vernacular and its related subjects. The majors program also focuses on enhancing the teachers’ problem solving ability through theoretical and practical understanding of education processes encompassing such items as textbooks, teaching and learning methods, and evaluation processes in implementing the language program. Additionally, children’s story-telling contests, study tours, exhibitions, and other student-run events are organized to complement the formal curriculum in cultivating the talented teachers capable for grasping the elementary school children and with language sensibility conducive to the regional societal needs.
