Introduction
The Department of Earth and Ocean Science first established in 1980 represents a natural science academic unit for the study and research in earth and ocean related phenomena. The majors program encompasses marine biology, ocean geology, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, and atmospheric science.
Aims
The Department of Earth and Ocean Science aims at nurturing the specialists for the preservation of Earth's environment and the economic development of energy and material resources. To achieve the goals we offer the majors curriculum involving the principles and biological characteristics of the natural phenomena and the constituent matters in the earth and oceanic biospheres, the atmosphere and the lithosphere through classroom lessons in theory and application, laboratory experiments, and practical education on board the marine training ship equipped with cutting-edge measurement apparatuses and equipment for on-site surveying.
Careers
- Graduates of the majors may go on to further study at graduate schools for advanced research and earn master’s and/or doctorate degrees. They find employment with ocean and marine science related jobs including National Meterological Administration and Weather Service, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Fisheries and Food, the Ministry of Environment, and other related public service agencies. Research careers are also accessible with Marine and Fishery Resource Research Institute, Public Health Environment Institute, Korea Oceanographic Institute, National Meterological Institute, Polar Research Center, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, National Fisheries Research & Development Institute, National Oceanographic Research Institute?(NORI), Institute of Pacific typhoon season, and other related research organizations
- Other opportunities; oceanic surveying, environmental impact assessment, aquiculture, geological surveying, underground water development, petroleum and related regional and national industrial businesses, museum and aquarium curators, cultural tourism guides, etc
