The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The College of Ocean Sciences set a goal of studying, educating, and developing the theories and their applications in the ocean sciences, including the understanding of the marine environment, the use and development of marine resources, and the use and conservation of marine space. It has also worked to contribute to the advancement of the local, national, and international communities by nurturing talented individuals.

In particular, it has concentrated on research in the ocean sciences that Jeju has the potential for regional competitiveness. Since 1999, it has led state-funded projects, including the Brain Korea (BK) 21, the New University for Regional Innovation (NURI), the Education of Regional Water Industrial Specialists, and the POST-BK 21. Currently, students participating in the state-funded Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation (LINC) program receive lots of financial aids and subsidies through scholarships. It has also become the cradle for the ocean sciences both nominally and virtually by establishing the cluster of ‘Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, regional industries, universities, and research institutes’ under the provincial vision for the development of the maritime and fisheries industries.

Introduction

Environmental pollution arising from industrialization and urbanization has become a serious concern threatening the very existence of humankind today. To prevent further deterioration and restore the damaged environment, it is critical for the country to strengthen its competitiveness in developing the advanced technologies to restore the environment and promote the quality of life for all. Solving the environmental problems entails the expertise in efficiently treating diverse kinds of industrial and livelihood pollutants and wastes.

The Department of Environmental Engineering was established with the primary aim of cultivating the talented well-rounded experts with the engineering design ability and practical work skills needed for the nation's sustainable growth as well as being capable to responding to global warming. Specific areas of the environmental engineering program includes the concerns on potable water and sewage, industrial and waste waters, soil and underground water, general and industrial wastes, noise vibration problem, atmospheric pollutants, and their monitoring, treatment, restoration, and preventive strategy. The majors students and graduates with the specialized knowledge about these subjects are eligible to take the tests for technical certification including the 1st grade certificates in industrial hygiene.

Aims

The primary objective of the Department of Environmental Engineering curriculum is to nurture the talented well-rounded experts with the engineering design ability and practical work skills needed for the nation's sustainable growth who are also capable of constructively responding to Global Warming.

Careers

Graduates of the majors program with various technical certificates ( designers of the environmental pollution prevention facilities or environmental risk assessors with certified licenses) are employed with industrial organizations dealing with water quality, air quality, wastes, soil, noise vibration, and industrial hygiene. They may also opt for graduate schools to earn master's and doctoral degrees for eventual careers in research at governmental and private/industrial sector laboratories or as government service workers relevant to environmental management and regulatory issues.
