University/Graduate

The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The College of Ocean Sciences set a goal of studying, educating, and developing the theories and their applications in the ocean sciences, including the understanding of the marine environment, the use and development of marine resources, and the use and conservation of marine space. It has also worked to contribute to the advancement of the local, national, and international communities by nurturing talented individuals.

In particular, it has concentrated on research in the ocean sciences that Jeju has the potential for regional competitiveness. Since 1999, it has led state-funded projects, including the Brain Korea (BK) 21, the New University for Regional Innovation (NURI), the Education of Regional Water Industrial Specialists, and the POST-BK 21. Currently, students participating in the state-funded Leaders in Industry-University Cooperation (LINC) program receive lots of financial aids and subsidies through scholarships. It has also become the cradle for the ocean sciences both nominally and virtually by establishing the cluster of ‘Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, regional industries, universities, and research institutes’ under the provincial vision for the development of the maritime and fisheries industries.

Introduction

The Department of Civil Engineering was established to economically develop the future-oriented, environmentally friendly and sustainable structures in 1991. The majors curriculum provides the knowledge and expertise in esthetic design, construction, maintenance and management of social overhead capitals (SOC) such as roads, harbors, and airports. Through the study of the curricular subjects, we nurture the creative and innovative civil engineers who are capable of implementing the value-added cutting-edge SOC projects responding to technology integration, specialization and diversification. The civil engineering forms the social infrastructure significantly impacting the nation’s competitiveness and industrial development, as it advances through close interactions among the diverse and specialized civil engineering fields. Ultimately, our majors program aims at cultivating the superior civil engineers with technical expertise, personal integrity and managerial skills, who strive for a leadership role in the new developmental and creative scholarly pursuits for the global and information-oriented society.

Aims

The Department of Civil Engineering educates its majors in such subjects as structural engineering, geo-engineering, surveying/topographic space information, hydrography, coastal/port engineering, civil engineering execution/construction to foster the talented professionals in civil engineering.

○ Be able to understand and analyze the engineering problems with the ability to solve problems by applying the expertise

○ Nurture the future- and global-oriented engineers

○ Foster the professionals capable of constructing safe societal infrastructure as well as its construction and practical management skills

Careers

Graduates of the majors program earn various professional certificates of qualifications in the areas of water quality, atmosphere, wastes, noise vibration, and industrial hygiene (design and specialization in environmental pollution and environmental risk assessment fields). They can also work for environmental government service organizations by passing national qualifying tests. Some of them go on to further study in graduate schools aiming to earn M.S. and/or Ph.D. degrees for eventual careers in industrial sector and with research institutes.
