The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The College of Natural Sciences led the establishment of the Bioscience Park to cultivate the health, beauty, and biological industries that are specialized regional strategic industries based on biological technologies. It also took the lead in creating the Jeju Science Park, one of the seven core projects promoted by Jeju Province to turn itself into a ‘Free International City’, in order to foster high-tech industries specializing in the information and biological technologies. In the process, the College of Natural Sciences actively helped advance the regional industries, generate new growth engines, create jobs, and add values to the local products.

The prominent faculty of the College of Natural Sciences have promoted domestic and international academic exchanges as well as research to educate highly specialized individuals which the local community requires. In order to solidify its status as the leader of a knowledge-based information society in the 21st century, it will keep pioneering the reform and ensure the students can attain a successful future.

Introduction

The Department of Mathematics is the only program specializing in mathematics teaching and research in Jeju Province. Established within the College of Natural Science in 1988, the department has been cultivating the mathematics experts to meet the needs for the country's economic development. To train the mathematics professionals, M.S. and Ph.D. degree courses were established in 1994 and 2000, respectively. Seven professors and two instructors comprise the current departmental faculty. The mathematics program earned a distinction of excellence in the 2012 Joongang Daily Newspaper rankings. It was also ranked superior in the intramural evaluations at Jeju National University.

Aims

The Department of Mathematics curriculum aims at teaching the mathematical theories and applications to analyze the natural phenomena and predict the future society through diverse information and data processing capabilities in fostering the imaginative leaders who are able to offer solutions for the development of the regional society and 4th industrial revolution, the nation's future growth motive.

Careers

Graduates of the mathematics majors program pursue further study in mathematics here at home and abroad or they can easily choose to specialize in mathematics-based disciplines such as computer science, statistics, engineering, economics and accounting after which professorial, research and secondary school teaching careers are accessible.

In addition, math related jobs are available with private college preparative academies, computer companies, financial and stock firms, insurance companies, and mathematics education organizations.
