University/Graduate

The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The College of Natural Sciences led the establishment of the Bioscience Park to cultivate the health, beauty, and biological industries that are specialized regional strategic industries based on biological technologies. It also took the lead in creating the Jeju Science Park, one of the seven core projects promoted by Jeju Province to turn itself into a ‘Free International City’, in order to foster high-tech industries specializing in the information and biological technologies. In the process, the College of Natural Sciences actively helped advance the regional industries, generate new growth engines, create jobs, and add values to the local products.

The prominent faculty of the College of Natural Sciences have promoted domestic and international academic exchanges as well as research to educate highly specialized individuals which the local community requires. In order to solidify its status as the leader of a knowledge-based information society in the 21st century, it will keep pioneering the reform and ensure the students can attain a successful future.

Introduction

In responding to the needs of the information-oriented society, the Department of Computational Statistics was established in 1994 to meet the demands of the society. We have been training the superior computational and statistical scientists who have gone to work for the related industrial sector as well as a variety of other professional establishments.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data and their next generation 4th industrial revolution further require the professionals who are capable of developing the computer software and analyzing the Big Data resources in the information age. Our department’s goals are to cultivate the experts specializing in data analysis, software development and their practical applications. To implement the program the students take up the curriculum based on both primary subjects and interdisciplinary convergence/fusion courses such as artificial intelligence, cyber physical system, financial statistics, information statistics, information security, IT-convergence, and biostatistics with their respective research programs run by seven departmental faculty members. Our faculty members are also involved in smart grid, electric vehicles, and augmented reality research projects of regional industrial implications through industry-academic cooperation collaborations.

Ultimately, the Department of Computational Statistics staffed with the outstanding faculty prepares our students for the 4th industrial revolution who are able to make important contributions to the regional society in general and its industry in particular.

Aims

Through the computation science and statistics curricula, the department aims to nurture the professionals with the ability and knowledge:

  1. Scientists with broad expertise and knowledge in computational science and statistics
  2. Professionals with the creative ability to solve problems of the information age society through diverse approaches
  3. Well-rounded persons of maturity and integrity with understanding and communicative personal attributes

Careers

Students educated through the departmental curricula will be able to work as skilled programmers for a variety of IT industries, networks, the internet and related enterprises. They are also well qualified as data analysts for insurance and financial companies, research and consulting firms, or governmental agencies. Alternatively, some of the majors go on to further study at graduate schools here at home or abroad for eventual research and/or teaching careers. With graduate degrees, they are able to find jobs as analysts of big data for the industrial sector and governmental agencies. Thus, the demands for the talented computational statisticians are rapidly rising in diverse career areas.
