University/Graduate

The cradle of student growth, a university that creates new values

The College of Humanities educates and conducts research on linguistics, literature, philosophy, history, and sociology. Fostering new intellectuals with refined knowledge on humanities, the College of Humanities aims to help realize the ideals of humanism ultimately. Graduates from the College of Humanities have made significant contributions to the development of both national and international communities, not to mention the local community, providing expertise in various fields.

In particular, Jeju National University has run the ‘Program to Foster Specialists on Cultural Contents, Planning, and Promotion’ together with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province since 2010 in order to offer more job opportunities for those majoring in the humanities and social sciences.

The Department of Sociology has conducted research on the ‘Public Management of Nature and Sustainable Life-Style’, participating in the state-funded ‘Social Sciences Korea (SSK)’ Program over the past three years. The research grew to be a medium-scale focused research project in September 2014. Furthermore, the ‘Project Management Group Cultivating Creative Talents on Local Cultural Contents’ led by the Department of Korean Language & Literature and the Department of History was selected to receive national support under the state-funded ‘University for Creative Korea (CK)’ Program this year. With this as a momentum, the College of Humanities will lead the education of talented individuals, specializing in cultural content through creative courses on humanities.

Introduction

The Department of History was established in 1981 with the purpose of nurturing students with rightful historical perspectives and knowledgeable judgement through the recognition of traditional Korean culture and the broader understanding of oriental and occidental cultures.

The aims of historical studies are to explore individual as well as mankind’s pasts. The departmental program also offers the information and knowledge essential for the understanding of the present and future societies. All humanity and social science studies are rooted in the human history, and as the life and its future get more complex and less predictable the importance of history studies cannot be overemphasized. In this regard, the history is truly a future-oriented subject of study.

The Department of History curricula are comprised of three parts, Korean History, Oriental History, and Occidental History. Each student freely opts for a preferred study program according to his/her interest and career goal. In the Korean history course, it is divided into the history of ancient, medieval and modern eras in studying their historical divisions as they are connected to the present times. In the Oriental and Occidental History programs, one studies to understand historical events and situations, and assess how they are related to the history of Korea. The departmental curricula aim to promote the better understanding of Korea’s historical and contemporary positions in the light of world history, searching for the direction toward the prosperous future.

Aims

The departmental study of history aims at providing the knowledge and information essential for designing the better future through scientific studies of our and human pasts. Our goal is to cultivate the students who can critically recognize the traditional Korean history through the broader understanding of oriental and occidental history and be able to make knowledgeable judgement for the future.

Careers

The knowledge of history is essential as the humanities study base for the understanding of Korean and foreign cultures. Students educated in the Department of History are able to find careers in humanities research, journalism and media professions, secondary school teaching positions, museums, exhibition organizations, and many other knowledge and information-based institutions. They may also choose graduate schools for eventual teaching and research careers in higher education. The ultimate goal of the Department of History is to nurture members of the society with liberal educational background and personal qualities.
