Jeju National University established the College of Arts & Design in 2012 to concentrate on educating specialized talents that are not only skilled in the artistic expression, creation, and theories, but also possess a strong personal style and knowledge.

The Faculty of Music educates the functional aspect of music performances and provides stability through music. It also runs courses for full-time teachers, contributes to the artistic activities in the local communities, and further matures and develops the creativity and artistic instincts at international level. The ambition of the Faculty of Music is to serve a pivotal role in the musical revitalization and emotional advancement of the entire nation.

The Faculty of Fine Arts offers majors in Korean Painting, Painting, and Sculpture. It offers educational courses on the overall theories of arts and their applications to foster intellectual and creative artists and art educators. The basic training courses of the Faculty of Fine Arts help improve the individual creativity and expressiveness and learn about the interrelations in the studies of sculpture to improve the artistic skills, and eventually promote the experimental attitudes, unique expressions, and comprehensive artistic understanding. The Faculty of Fine Arts also offers holistic education that incorporates the pursuit of truth and social demand through the formative arts. The Major of Multimedia Design of the Faculty of Industrial Design offers courses on the design analysis, design planning, design concepts, and design realization to activate ‘Capstone’ designs, run regional design projects, participate in the domestic and international contests, and offer on-site training for more job opportunities in the specialized fields, including public, environmental, visual, product, UX, 3D, and CG designs. The wide array of educational methods and the multidisciplinary courses of the Major of Multimedia Design nurture ‘creative designers’ suitable for the contemporary era. The Major of Culture & Formative Design offers educational courses on fiber design, metal design, ceramic design, and product design, as well as the converged courses on the afore-mentioned techniques, for the development of the cultural and tourism industries. Students majoring in Culture & Formative Design can have uniquely tailored experiences using a variety of materials and will better understand the culture and industries.

Introduction

The Faculty of Fine Art originated from the Department of Fine Art Education in 1972. It was subsequently reorganized as the Department of Fine Art, College of Humanities in 1987, Masters Course in Fine Art Education in the Faculty of Fine Art, College of Education in 1985, and MA program in Graduate School (Majors in Korean Paintings, Western Paintings and Plastic Arts) in 2002, the JNU Faculty of Arts (Majors in Korean Paintings, Western Paintings, and Plastic Arts) in 2009, and finally the JNU College of Arts and Design Faculty of Fine Art (Korean Paintings, Western Paintings, and Plastic Arts) in 2012. The fine art program has played a pioneering role in promoting the fine art in the regional society through the sponsorship of 1st JNU Fine Art Exhibit in May 1973 and All-Province Secondary School Painting Skills Contest in 1979 with its tradition to uplift the creativity and painting skills of junior and senior high school youth continuing until today. Recognition of the fine art expertise comes with a completion of the required courses. It offers a variety of opportunities as a painter and/or fine art professional at relevant institutional organizations. Also, employment at a broadcast or journalistic establishment in charge of the fine art program may also open up for a fine art major. A teaching job is available at various schools. One can also opt for an advanced research overseas or at a graduate school in Korea. There are many other positions for which a fine art’s graduate is well qualified for employment.

Aims

The Faculty of Fine Art offers majors in Korean Paintings, Western Paintings, and Plastic Arts. It is staffed with both domestically and internationally active, creative and experienced professors providing the entire spectrum of fine art education based on newer, profoundly theoretical and laboratory methods of teaching. The program aims at training expert painters and fine art teachers with pedagogic devotion and creative artistic insights. The Plastic Arts program aims at broadly based education to meet the needs of the society and to satisfy the majors for seeking truth through the form of plastic arts. The curriculum entails a wide range of liberal education course as well as laboratory practices to uplift individual student’s creative potentials, expressive power and aesthetic sense. In the majors course, plastic art theory and laboratory program will be strengthened in order to inspire the student’s diverse and progressive experimental mind as well as foster their expressive ability and overall thinking function about all aspects of fine arts.

Careers

Upon completion of the required curricular courses, the graduates are recognized as expert fine art and music artists. They are also employable at relevant fine arts institutions and organizations as professional performers, broadcast and public media artists. Fine Art and Music Majors may also seek teaching jobs by completing the required teaching qualification certification. They can also opt for an advanced research overseas or at a graduate school in Korea. There are many other positions for which a fine art or music graduate is well qualified for employment.
