In the "2024 Global Basic Laboratory (BRL)" contest organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Research Foundation, the "Basic Laboratory for Survival Strategy of Marine Climate Change Biological Indicators" was selected. This project is led by a convergence team of up-and-coming professors from JNU.
The BRL project aims to discover and support research topics that require convergence research to enhance the country’s future scientific competitiveness. The JNU Convergence Research Team proposed a study on the "Climate Change Biological Indicator Species Survival Strategy." The team includes Prof. Hur Sung-pyo from the Department of Marine Life Science, Prof. Choi Soo-youn from the Department of Biology, Prof. Park Jong-eun from the Faculty of Biotechnology, and Dr. Kim Byung-hoon from the BK21 Future Strategic Fisheries Life Education Group at JNU. The team will receive a grant of KRW 1.375 billion for three years, from 2024 to 2026.
The research team comprises experts in marine biophysiology, animal molecular biology, and bioinformatics. Through multidisciplinary convergence research, the team aims to comprehensively understand fish survival strategies in response to marine climate change using transcriptome and epigenome analysis. The project is expected to cultivate global research talent in the field and build advanced research infrastructure. It also aims to contribute to biodiversity conservation and industry development by creating a marine ecosystem change prediction model and understanding the survival strategies of organisms in response to climate change.
JNU Pesident Kim Eel-hwan said, "The selection of the Global Basic Laboratory in 2024 is an achievement that recognizes JNU's research capabilities. JNU will actively support this initiative to foster global talent in related fields and establish advanced global research infrastructure."
