Jeju National University’s Intellectual Property Education Project Team held an education program on developing online learning materials as copyrighted contents on Monday (April 5).

The digital-focused class had been organized to strengthen the knowledge and capacity of JNU’s faculty members concerning the concept of intellectual property.

The rampant need for online courses, which started from last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has increased the possibility of copyright infringement. Reflecting the trend, JNU’s latest education program addressed statutory guidelines and case examples of creating teaching materials and managing their copyrights.

During the program, attorney at law Kim Minjung (an appraiser at the Korea Copyright Commission) explained the concepts and features of works and copyrights, the legal actions available when facing copyright violation, and the key requirements for using copyrighted works for school education.

Introducing the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Kim called for precaution on using copyrighted items for educational purposes. The lawyer also answered the questions concerning fonts, sound sources, and portrait images that are easily overlooked while teachers develop online resources. Using specific case examples, the lecturer helped the participants have a better knowledge of how to properly use copyrighted contents in their teaching materials.

Kim In-jung, head of the Intellectual Property Education Project Team, stated that the education agency will discover topics with imminent local needs in 2021 through its customized on-the-job training program for teachers. The program will help the university’s faculty be better aware of the intellectual properties and utilize what they learned in their classes.
