Local basic scientists meet at JNU to share research outcomes

Jeju National University’s Research Institute for Basic Sciences held its first regular seminar for the 2021 term on Friday (March 25).

The institute recently started inviting off-campus researchers for the academic event to revitalize research-oriented networking and continued sharing of local research findings.

The first round of the seminar was held in association with the Jeju Research Center, a regional branch of the Korea Institute of Ocean Science & Technology (KIOST).

The presenters from KIOST included Son Young Baek (director, Jeju Research Center) and Oh Chulhong (senior researcher, Jeju Research Center), who introduced their latest research projects, titled, “Understanding the Jeju seas through remote sensing” and “A Study on the Utilization of marine microbes and their genetic resources”, respectively.

In turn, JNU’s professor Moon Jae-hong briefed the peer researchers on his latest research project at the JNU Research Institute for Basic Sciences, with a focus on building and utilizing a regional marine forecasting model.

The Research Institute for Basic Sciences stated that the seminar provided an opportunity to mutually learn about ongoing studies in the local seas and come up with diverse analyzing methods to tackle imminent issues such as marine algal blooms.

The second event for the 2021 term will be held on May 27, in association with the Jeju Groundwater Research Center of the Jeju Research Institute.

JNU’s Research Institute for Basic Sciences plans to regularize the joint seminar to spur local researchers to conduct joint research on basic sciences for the benefit of the local community.
