Jeju National University and KEPCO Research Institute to work for tech cooperation

Jeju National University’s Research Center for Electric Energy and Korea Electric Power Corporation’s Research Institute agreed Wednesday (March 24) to cooperate for research and development of renewable energy-related technologies.
The Research Center for Electric Energy is JNU’s on-campus research group of leading scientists in the fields of on-site demonstration of renewable energy sources. The specialized institute is highly recognized nationwide for its outstanding academic performances.
The electricity power grid on Jeju Island has recently experienced lowering grid flexibility and insufficient power transmission due to the increasing adoption of renewable energy sources.
To resolve the issues, Jeju has actively carried out testbed projects for smart power technologies such as a high voltage, direct current electric power transmission system and an energy storage system.
KEPCO’s Research Institute runs the Next Generation Transmission & Substation Center to maximize the nation’s receptive capacity for renewable energy by preemptively suggesting solutions to pressing issues in the electric power system.
Under the memorandum of understanding for academic cooperation with the KEPCO Research Institute, the JNU plans to create momentum for the research and development of renewable energy-related technologies and the promotion of information sharing.
The university especially expects the MOU to boost substantive industry-academic exchanges centering on the combination of interpretative and modeling technologies and empirical technologies. The new platform for sharing information and ideas on the future-oriented power supply system will also contribute greatly to the development of the nation’s power industry, the university added.
