Ocean Leisure Sports Center kick starts traditional games championships

Jeju National University’s Ocean Leisure Sports Center announced Friday (April 9) that the JNU Traditional Gaming Championships series is being held for the JNU faculty and students.

The JNU institute has made efforts to raise public awareness of and draw attention to traditional Korean games since 2019, when the National Research Foundation started funding its six-year research project on sports education programs using traditional games.

As part of the project, the sports research group opened the 1st JNU Traditional Gaming Championships series, with its first events of Jegi Chagi [Korean hacky sack] and Gonggi Nori [Korean jacks game] held from March 30 through April 1.

The traditional games were played by more than 150 participants, and three of them who recorded the highest scores in each of the games were given award certificates and prizes.

The championships will continue to be held until the end of May, featuring different traditional games every month. In April, the winners of the Tuho Nori [Korean pitch-pot game] and the Ttakji Chigi [Korean slap-match game] events will be determined.

Alongside hosting the championships, the JNU Ocean Leisure Sports Center will also develop education programs and seminars as well as teaching materials to establish the rules of traditional Korean games and increase public interest in the significance of the nation’s traditional culture.
