MOU signed between JNU’s natural dyeing experts and local industrial convergence center

Jeju National University’s Support Center for Natural Dyeing Businesses and the Jeju-based Sixth Industry Support Center signed a memorandum of understanding for mutual prosperity, late on Wednesday (March 31).

Under the MOU, the two institutes agreed to work together to effectively use natural resources of rural areas, thus contributing to revitalizing Jeju’s natural dyeing industry and boost local economic growth.

Specifically, each party is willing to join forces and provide support for the local industrial development involving Jeju-based textile businesses and rural natural dye providers. And the two parties plan to mutually recommend and certify best-performing textile dyeing businesses, while carrying out joint marketing activities for their products. A system for cooperation will also be established to expand the distribution channels of the certified businesses and other products containing natural substances from local agricultural regions.

JNU Support Center for Natural Dyeing Businesses has recently joined the Rural District-based Industry Support Project, a state-led program funded by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and South Korea’s Ministry of SMEs and Startups. To help local small and medium businesses build capacity, the center promotes a hybrid upgrading of their products by fusing local cultural aspects with digital attributes. Other support measures include running an online and an offline flea market platform for textile products dyed with natural dyes, diversifying the distribution channels using live commerce, and hosting workshops for product development and seminars on global trends.

The Sixth Industry Support Center is a local incorporated association working for the “sixth industrial development” of Jeju’s agricultural businesses through a convergence of the secondary and tertiary industries. The support center especially implements and manages the state-led evaluation and certification system for Jeju-based businesses attempting the sixth industrialization. In the process, the center provides on-site coaching services for small-scale farmers, runs a retail store specializing in the sixth industry-focused specialties, and supports the establishment of customized distribution platforms.
