Jeju National University’s WISET project team announced Monday (April 5) that it held the J-WISET Girls Mentoring Workshop for female students studying engineering and technology degrees on April 2.
WISET, standing for “women in science, engineering, and technology”, is a state-led regional program which was established in 2003 for the empowerment of women engineering students. JNU’s WISET has run the annual workshop named the J-WISET Girls since 2012 to build female undergraduates’ leadership and career capabilities in the fields of engineering and technology.
The April 2 workshop proceeded in a ‘mini-talk concert’ format, an alternative talk show featuring Jin Seong-yoo (Dept. of Animal Biotechnology) of Dangro Dangyoo which is last year’s best-performing team.
The workshop also presented the certificate of appointment to Ko Hye-won (Dept. of Computer Science and Statistics) of the Re-Will-e team, who represents the J-WISET Girls members for the 2021-2022 academic year.
After the award ceremony, each of the newly appointed teams revealed their activity plans and received mentoring support on the plans.
The J-WISET Girls mentoring program is promoted as a part of the state-led R-WeSET (Regional-Women Empowerment in Science, Engineering and Technology) program. R-WeSET’s pre-career courses were devised in 2017 to empower the nation’s female students enrolled in secondary and tertiary education.
JNU’s WISET project team, the R-WeSET regional agency, has managed the J-WISET Girls workshop, sponsored by the Center for Women in Science, Engineering and Technology, the Gender Equality, Family and Juvenile Services Division of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, and Jeju National University.
According to an official from JNU’s WISET project team, the institutional mentoring support through the J-WISET has contributed to raising the ratio of women engineering and technology students landing jobs or pursuing graduate studies over the past four years.
