Jeju National University and a Jeju-based onshore wind energy company agreed to cooperate for human resource development and data sharing.

JNU Graduate School’s Faculty of Wind Energy Engineering and Sumang Wind Power Co., Ltd. met on Thursday (April 15) to sign an agreement for the nurturing of talented wind energy engineers and the efficient operation of local wind farms.

Under the agreement, the wind energy company will provide raw data to the university’s graduate program on wind energy, while the school-based researchers will share their findings with the company and offer advice on the newest technologies and information.

The graduate program will also help the private enterprise obtain state-of-the-art wind power technologies by inviting the company to seminars and other education programs on wind energy engineering.

Sumang Wind Power is a renowned wind farm operating company, which built the first onshore wind farm on Jeju Island. In addition to providing raw data to the graduate school, the company will install the light detection and ranging system in the school.

The wind power business will also contribute 10 million won to the graduate program’s development fund every year, while creating an exclusive space for the school’s research projects.

Prof. Ko Kyungnam, head of the Faculty of Wind Energy Engineering, stated that the agreement represents the most desirable industry-academy cooperation for mutual prosperity.

Kim Byung-jin, CEO of Sumang Wind Power, pledged that the space and fund for research will continue to be provided for the next 18 years according to the plan. He expressed high hopes for the growing interest of Jeju-based companies in seeking industry-academy cooperation.

Earlier in 2019, Sumang Wind Energy agreed with Jeju National University to contribute 25 million won every year to the university’s Development Fund through its holding company, Sumang Holdings Co., Ltd.
