Genesystem, South Korea’s emerging biotechnology company, donated four types of state-of-the-art gene checking devices worth over 200 million won to Jeju National University, the university announced Friday (April 23).

The company’s system is based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a testing technique of copying and amplifying selected nucleic acid from pathogens, saliva, or sputum sampled from patients. As a certain genetic material can be selectively amplified, PCR testing widely used for detecting bacteria or viruses, diagnosing infectious or hereditary diseases such as COVID-19, and conducting paternity tests.

The PCR devices donated by Genesystem will be placed in the Jeju National University Veterinary Teaching Hospital and other related departments of the university to help researchers develop on-site diagnostic methods of hereditary diseases and study diverse chromosome changes found in animals.

Genesystem, established in 2010, is a biotech engineering company which specializes in the development of molecular testing platforms, targeting on-site testing needs. The company’s ultra-fast PCR technology won the Presidential Prize in the 2013 Korea Invention Patent Exhibition. In 2017, the biotech venture secured a handy molecular testing technology for diagnosing influenza viruses. This year, the company made a global advancement, with its foodborne pathogen detection kit approved as a certified food safety testing kit.

The donation ceremony was held on Friday at Jeju National University, in the presence of Seo Yujin (CEO of Genesystem), Song Seok-eon (president of JNU), and other officials of the university and the company.
