Global Citizenship Education going viral among local schools

Jeju National University’s Global Citizenship Education Program has become a favored lecture course for local students,

Jeju International Development Cooperation Center (JJIDCC) announced Wednesday (April 21).

In the first half of 2021 alone, the JJDCC special education program will visit 13 elementary, middle, and high schools on Jeju Island to meet more than 1,000 students.

JJIDCC, together with the Jeju International Training Center affiliated with UNITAR (UNITAR Cifal Jeju/JITC), organized the event to educate students on the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to the world’s peace, poverty, human rights, environment, and career issues. The goal of the program is to raise the children’s awareness of global issues, and eventually help them grow up into global citizens who are willing to fulfill their responsibilities for the issues shared by all human communities.

The students will learn about the interconnectivity of people as global citizens; concerns over human rights and child labor; impacts of climate change and other environmental issues; efforts to practice the SDGs; and career paths available in the field of international development and cooperation.

To be more accessible to vulnerable students, the JJIDCC and the UNITAR CIFAL Jeju/JITC especially invite professional lecturers to Jeju’s rural areas and remote islands.

The two organizers expect that the program will contribute to raising young global citizens with desirable attitudes and nurturing global talent to keep the world sustainable.

The education program began in March in the Dream Keeper Community Child Center, and some 500 students have since taken the course, with the latest one offered in April in Seogwipo Girls Middle School.

An elementary school student from Dongshin Community Child Center said he learned in the program that desertification is partially attributed to the hamburger, his favorite food. The program made him decide to become a global citizen who reduces the use of plastic and protects the environment, he added.

Application for the course in the latter half of this year will be open late in July. Those who need more information about the application may contact the organizers by phone (JJIDCC: 064-754-8249 / UNITAR CIFAL Jeju: 064-735-6573) or by e-mail (jejugcde@gmail.com).
