Contest for trademarking Jeju’s indigenous culture kicked off

A contest for trademarking the indigenous culture of Jeju Island kicked off, Jeju National University’s Intellectual Property Education Center announced Tuesday (April 20).

The university’s IP education institute organized the 2021 Jeju Indigenous Culture Trademark and Design Patent Contest, together with the Jeju provincial government, Jeju TechnoPark, Jeju Regional Intellectual Property Center, and Seogwipo Industrial Science High School.

The application was opened on April 19 and will continue until May 21 on the contest’s online application page (https://forms.gle/4YToUSpnmxBkNqa18). The winners will be determined late in June after an education program on patent application and a review of the applicants’ presentations by patent attorneys.

According to the JNU IP Education Center, the contest was prepared to utilize Jeju’s indigenous cultural heritage as trademarks and design patents, thus developing a model of securing IP rights over the tangible or intangible cultural assets of the local community. The contest is also aimed at encouraging young people to create intellectual properties.

Anyone whose address is registered in Jeju may submit an entry for the trademarking opportunity. The formerly created contents are eligible for entry submission if the submission is made within six months after the release of the content or four years after its patent application.

The winners of the contest will be awarded as follows: One Gold Prize winner for the Trademark and the Design Patent categories (both presented by JNU President), with the prize money of 500,000 won each; one Silver Prize winner for the Trademark category (presented by Chairman of Jeju Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the Design Patent category (presented by Director of Jeju TechnoPark), with the prize money of 300,000 won each; four Bronze Prize winners for the Trademark and the Design Patent categories (both presented by Director of JNU IP Education Center and Schoolmaster of Seogwipo Industrial High School) with the prize money of 100,000 won each; and six Encouragement Prize winners for the Trademark and the Design Patent categories (both presented by Director of JNU IP Education Center), with the prize money of 50,000 won each.

More details about the content are available at the JNU IP Education Center (064-754-3777).
