Jeju National University’s Research Institute for Basic Science held the 4th Expert Lecture on Basic Sciences, the institute announced on Friday (April 30).

The university-led institute explained that Hyun Sang-min of Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology was invited for the lecture program held in the Halla Public Library on Wednesday the same week.

Hyun spoke about how the environment has changes on the earth, particularly in the ocean. Specifically, the marine scientist addressed the changing global environment, different aspects and impacts of climate change, marine pollution caused due to heavy metal, plastic, or fine particulate matters, and the changing marine ecosystem due to human activities.

The university’s research institute decided to hold the event in the local library for mutual institutional benefits of the public lecture. The institute works to create a science-friendly atmosphere to conserve the clean environment and biosphere of Jeju Island through education programs for Jeju residents. According to the institute, four more rounds of the expert lecture on basic sciences are scheduled to be held in June, August, October, and December this year.

The education event strictly follows the national quarantine guidelines to prevent the COVID-19 spread by mandating the participants to wear face coverings and forbidding those whose single reading in temperature is higher than 37.5℃. The lecture room is equipped with hand sanitizers and regularly ventilated.
