Support for Korean language course in honor of Jeju’s woman educator agreed JNU Office of Int’l Affairs to invite trainees from Choi Jung Sook Girls’ High School in Burundi

Jeju National University’s Office of International Affairs will support the Korean language training of graduates from Choi Jung Sook Girls’ High School in Burundi.

According to the university institute, its officials met with the representatives of the Commemorative Project Group in Honor of Choi Jung Sook (Choi Jung Sook Honor Group) on Thursday (April 29) to sign an agreement on inviting Burundi students for the university’s Korean language course.

Choi Jung Sook (1902-1977) was a female educator who served as the first Jeju Provincial Superintendent of Education. She is also known as a Korean independence activist, a feminist enlightenment activist, a healthcare provider, and a religious person, who devoted herself to local community development.

Choi Jung Sook Girls’ High School was founded in Burundi in September 2018 by the Choi Jung Sook Honor Group with the support of Jeju residents. The school is located in Muzinda, a village 35 kilometers from the country’s capital city of Bujumbura. It is Burundi’s first girls’ high school and will hold the first graduation ceremony for 66 students in July this year.

Under the agreement between JNU Office of International Affairs and the Choi Jung Sook Honor Group, two of the school’s seniors, including the former head of the Student Union and the student with the finest record, will visit the university for a six-month Korean language Korean language course. After finishing the course, the students will stay in their sponsors’ homes for two more years to receive industrial training.

For the language training program, Korea University’s College of Medicine where Choi graduated will finance the students’ flight and language training costs, while their sponsors will pay for the expenses of their stays on Jeju Island.
