The 2021 Traditional Gaming Championships for Jeju Residents was held on May 2, Jeju National University’s Ocean Leisure Sports Center announced Tuesday (May 4).

The championships started at 11 a.m. and continued until 3 p.m. in Jeju City Hall’s Eoullim Square, attracting around 100 contestants for the Tuho Nori [Korean pitch-pot game] and the Ttakji Chigi [Korean slap-match game] events.

The program was especially meaningful as it was held at the beginning of May, the nation’s “family month”, and provided an opportunity for local families to strengthen their bonds by enjoying the traditional games together.

Jeju National University’s Ocean Leisure Sports Center has made efforts to raise public awareness of and draw attention to traditional Korean games since 2019, when the National Research Foundation started funding its six-year research project on sports education programs using traditional games.

Prof. Kim Duk-jin, director of the center, stated that his institute will visit more public spots such as traditional markets, tourist attractions, and primary and secondary education facilities to bring more public attention to traditional games.
