Special meet-up event on open source for start-ups held

Jeju National University’s Software Convergence Education Institute held the 2021 Spring-term Special Lecture on Start-ups, the institute announced Friday (April 30).
The special lecture event was titled, “Open Source SW Meet-Up”, in the university’s Ara Convention Hall on April 28 and 29.
The program featured lecturers who are leading software developers, including Ko Seung-won (CEO of Return Value Corp.), Shim Ho-seong (vice chairman of Korea Open Source Software Association), and Oh Jae-woong (deputy department head of Invites Healthcare Corp.). Ko gave a special lecture to those software developers who are looking for business opportunities, while Shim and Oh addressed the changing trends related to the open source development.
The latest lectures especially appealed to the participants because members of the first Software Pioneers (a group of supporters promoting software development) shared their success stories in starting up a business. Students who listened to the lectures also learned about the global trend of the open source software.
“I used to be afraid of failures but the lecture program taught me that failing also means a valuable experience,” said Kim Jin-young (Department of Computer Engineering) after the event.
Another participant named Bae Hyun-jin (Department of Computer Science and Statistics) also mentioned the lectures were insightful and taught her about the significance of the open sources in the software industry.
Song Wang-cheol, director of the university’s Software Convergence Education Institute, expressed his gratitude to the lectures for their valuable lectures. The education institute will keep making efforts to encourage the students to start up their own businesses and promote the creation of open sources for software.
The institute plans to continue its lectures series in May and June, with the topics of artificial intelligence and big data analysis, respectively.
