Disaster management scholarship granted to 33 student victims of recent car collision

A special scholarship worth 14 million won has been given to a total of 33 students who were injured in the latest car collision, Jeju National University announced on Wednesday (May 5).
The school authorities introduced the emergency measure because the vehicle accident that happened at the intersection near the university entrance last month caused great damage to the school community. Due to the accident, three students are still in hospital receiving treatment for severe injuries and 30 more students also need a medical treatment.
A university official explained that the term “social accidents” stipulated in the Framework Act on the Management of Disasters and Safety applies to this case since the vehicle accident has had a serious impact on the overall community. The university’s disaster relief measure is aimed at supporting the injured students’ recovery and returning to school.
The scholarship was contributed from different sources of the Jeju National University Development Fund, according to the university. Three million won was provided to one of the victims who has yet to regain consciousness after severe injuries through the Hallasan Corp. Fund, while two seriously injured students who are in need of a long-term hospitalization and a surgical treatment received 1 million won each contributed through the Jamae Guksu [Sisters Noodles] Fund. The university used its own fund to provide an emergency fund worth 300,000 won to the rest of the victims, respectively.
