South Korea’s Ministry of Education (MOE) will continue to fund Jeju National University (JNU) in its efforts to improve the nation’s college entrance system, the university announced Monday (May 10).

The Korean Council for University Education (KCUE), the agency of the MOE-led tertiary education projects, recently conducted an interim assessment of the contributions of the nation’s universities to lightening the burdens of high school students.

Based on the results of the KCUE assessment, MOE recognized JNU’s achievements in substantially improving high school education for three consecutive years.

KCUE assessed that JNU worked for the fairness of its admission process, while alleviating excessive qualification requirements to provide more opportunities to local students. The school was also highly appraised for actively sharing necessary information with the potential applicants and running different high school-to-university programs despite the difficulties amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOE will allocate the amount of additional funding, considering the number of the selected schools’ admission officers as well as the results of the latest assessment. In 2019 and 2021, JNU requested the state government grant worth 480 million won, respectively, and MOE accepted fully accepted the university’s requests.

Song Seok-eon, the president of the university, stated that JNU kept communicating with high school students and their parents and teachers to substantialize their school curricula and simplify JNU’s admission process. With three new majors in advanced technologies (data science, artificial intelligence, and biomedical informatics) opening next year, the university will make concerted efforts to foster local talent who will lead the fourth industrial revolution, he pledged.
