Regional Leading University Promotion Group seeks participants to clean costal environment

Jeju National University’s Regional Leading University Promotion Group (Director Lee, Dong-cheol) and Jeju City Center for Cultural Affairs (Director Kim, Byeong-soo) announced on May 26 to accept participants of ‘2021 Costal Environment Cleaning Event, Sooneuleum (meaning ‘sharing’ in Jeju Dialect)’ until the end of the month.

Around 30 students currently registered to the member schools of the Regional Leading University Promotion business, namely Jeju National University and Jeju International University, are expected to join. Applicants are to fill in an application form posted on JNU News at JNU webpage (http://www.jejunu.ac.kr/main) and send to jejuculture2021@gmail.com.

The event is a part of a cultural affair of Jeju City and the purpose is for the participants to walk along the coasts of Jeju City, collect garbage, analyze the content, and inform citizens of the environmental issues. Under the COVID circumstances, the participants will form teams of 4 or fewer members to roam around.

JNU Regional Leading University Promotion Business Group will open an online orientation session on Jun 3 to share the thoughts and experience of a region’s environmental activist, also introducing the current status of garbage found in the coastal area, its recycling method, analysis results, and ways to prevent contamination.

Jeju City will grant awards to excellent results. The 1st place winner will be given an opportunity to take part in ‘Result Sharing Workshop’ in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, a city officially designated for cultural affairs.

Director Lee said, “the event is expected to raise attention among the participants about issues in Jeju region, and to further promote a cooperative mood in local communities through volunteering.”
