Workshop held focusing on lessons from Fukushima nuclear disaster 10 years later

Jeju National University’s Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology and Seoul National University jointly held a two-day workshop on nuclear safety on May 7 and 8.
Under the theme of “Ten years after the Fukushima nuclear and nuclear safety”, the 2021 Workshop on Nuclear Science and Technology introduced some of the latest research projects of the two universities, as well as the recent research trends in the nuclear power-related areas.
Prof. Choi Su Seok, the director of the JNU Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology, said the event had been organized to bring attention to the significance of nuclear safety as this year marks 10 years since the tragic tsunami and nuclear disaster at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Through the continuous research and exchanges, Jeju and Seoul National Universities will share accurate information on concerns over Japan’s contaminated radioactive water discharges and work to foster talents in the energy sector, he added.
JNU Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology was launched in 1982 as the Radioactivity Use Research Institute with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and renamed the Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology in 2011.
The JNU institute works to lay the groundwork for nuclear energy in the future through research and development of key technologies. The institute’s latest efforts include signing an agreement with the Jeju Lava Seawater Industrialization Support Center for mutual cooperation on measuring the radioactivity of Jeju’s waters.
The institute is also designated to officially test the radioactivity levels of primary products and processed foods produced from Jeju Island.
