University’s library to operate reading club, ‘rackety library’

 

 

Jeju National University Library (Director Kim, So-mi) announced on May 28th that it will operate a reading club, ‘Rackety library: read and share.’

The reading club has been on since 2020 as a part of the National Development Project, with locals and university members together as participants. The partakers would read books and share information and opinions together to rear community spirit and expand the base of reading.

 

This session of the reading club will be conducted under the theme of ‘Jeju during the Joseon Dynasty era.’ Books designated for reading are ‘Joseon Japsa (Kang, Moon-jong et al.),’ a book describing the various occupations existed in Joseon, and ‘Janghancheol Pyohaerok (translated by Kim, Ji-hong),’ a journal of drift written by Jang, Han-cheol, a man born in Aewol, Jeju who passed the state examination in 1775 and got drifted in the winter of 1770 on his way to Seoul.

 

The reading club will be operated both online and offline considering the COVID issue. On every Fridays of June, participants are to read the designated books together, along with talking sessions led by Professor Kang, Moon-jon (Jeju National University), Professor Kim, Ji-hong (Gyeongsang National University), and Doctor Kim, Oh-jin (Jeju Climate and Cultural Research Institute), respectively on Jun 11, 18, and 25 at 2 pm. All participants will receive the two books for reading and are required to submit a reading activity record about one of the books given.
