The scholarship in memory of the late Dr. Lee Si-hyang, a Korean businessman from Jeju residing in Japan, was awarded to JNU students during a ceremony held on September 12. This scholarship program has been in place since 2013.
JNU President Kim El-hwan presided over the delivery ceremony, which took place in the JNU conference room. At the event, Dr. Lee's son, Lee Sang-hoon (former President of the Jeju Residents’ Association in Kanto, Japan), presented a total of KRW 30 million in scholarships to 15 JNU students, awarding KRW 2 million to each recipient, including Hwang Chan, a student in the accounting department of the JNU College of Economics & Commerce.
The Dr. Si-hyang Lee Scholarship began in 2005 with the aim of discovering and supporting talents who contribute to the development of their country and community. The current fund size stands at KRW 13 billion. This scholarship has been awarded to JNU students every year since 2013, marking its 10th iteration this year.
Among the scholarship recipients were two students from Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju-si—the hometown of Dr. Lee—and two from his alma mater, Jeju Jungang High School.
Dr. Lee showed significant support for JNU, donating a total of KRW 2.12 billion to the JNU Development Fund since 2010 to foster talent and contribute to the development of his hometown. He also contributed JPY 10 million for the successful hosting of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, JPY 10 million for the construction of the Federation of Korean Residents in Japan Headquarters, and KRW 50 million for the Hankyung-myeon Office.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Lee received various awards during his lifetime, including government sports medals, the Jeju Island Cultural Award, and the Japanese Red Cross Gold Merit Award. He was also awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration from JNU in 2010 and the Order of Civil Merit Moranjang in 2012 for his efforts to promote friendly exchanges between Korea and Japan.
Dr. Lee was actively involved in numerous organizations, serving as an advisor to the Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Tokyo, the Korean Sports Council in Japan, and the Jeju Sports Council, as well as holding leadership roles in the Jeju Residents' Association in Japan.
At the ceremony, Lee Sang-hoon pledged to carry on his father's legacy, expressing the hope that JNU would continue to be a cradle for developing talents that contribute to the advancement of Jeju and Korea.
