Current 6.6 bn won fund for R&D and industry-academy cooperation to be doubled by 2025

Jeju National University kick-started making efforts to raise its own fund.

Early on Monday (May 31), Song Seok-eon, the university’s president, emphasized the importance of research capabilities and industry-academy cooperation. Reiterating the point of his previous statement during the 69th anniversary of the university’s foundation, the school head also revealed the plan to raise the JNU-R&D Fund.

Since his inauguration in 2018, approximately 6.6 billion won has been contributed to the fund for research and development purposes. The university is now willing to expand the fund to be worth 12.5 billion won by 2025. The fund will then be used to provide an extended support for researchers, systemize the research support system, and build a research-friendly environment including infrastructures for industry-academy cooperation.

The recent fall in the number of the nation’s school-aged population and the resulting increasingly fierce competition between universities call for education institutions to transform themselves and create a driving force through a solid support for researchers, the university explained.

President Song stated that Jeju National University’s industry-academy cooperation teams have shown a growth in terms of attracting external projects, with their estimated value up from 57.5 billion won in 2018 to 71.9 billion won in 2020. Particularly, the school-led teams won the bid for four mid- and long-term projects under the state-run programs, including the LINC+, the software-centered university development project, three research centers in the STEM field, and the support project for humanities and sociology research centers. In 2020, the nation’s BK+ program assigned five projects to the school.

The university’s president emphasized that the expansion of the university’s own fund will allow for a stable support for researchers, thus ushering in the future with a sustainable research environment and mutual prosperity with the local community.
