JNU recognized by NAQS as first local public institution for safety inspection

South Korea’s National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service (NAQS) designated Jeju National University as its 63rd Safety Inspection Agency. With the latest designation, the university became NAQS’s first public institution in Jeju to carry out its projects.
The Safety Inspection Agencies under the auspices of NAQS is a nationally authorized institute that analyzes harmful substances (320 chemical residues) left in agricultural products. The analytical work is processed as specified in the Agricultural Product Quality Control Act and the Rules on the Labeling and Safety Inspection of Genetically Modified Agricultural Products.
The NAQS designation was made in lined with the project for sharing and disseminating performances of relocated public institutes, which is promoted by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.
Jeju-based lawmaker Wi Seong-gon (Democratic Parth, Seogwipo-si Constituency), Jeju National University’s Department of Horticultural Science, and the Seogwipo branch of Korea New Farmers’ Association provided a full support for the designation.
After the designation was announced, Lee Jung-a, senior research for safety inspection, said the school will double its efforts to raise the credibility in the safety of agricultural products produced in Jeju.
Rep. Wi congratulated the designation, emphasizing the possibility that the accreditation of eco-friendly labeling for local agricultural products will become faster and easier. The lawmaker expressed high hopes for the expansion of Jeju National University’s analytic areas to water quality, soil, and food in the future.
Producing safe agricultural products is considered critical not just in different industrial sectors that involve smart-farm, beauty, cosmetics, and food products.
Previously, the inspection of a large volume of harmful substances had to be conducted outside Jeju Island, which took 7 to 10 days. JNU’s latest NAQS designation will likely shorten the period to 2 to 3 days.
