10,500 young Hong Kong groupers released into Hamdeok waters

Jeju Aquaculture Breed Evaluation Center of Jeju National University’s Marine Science Institute and Fisheries Corporation CR, JNU’s technology holding company, released one million 5-day-old larvae and 10,500 100-day-old fries of Hong Kong groupers into Hamdeok waters of Jocheon-eup, Jeju City.
The young Hong Kong gropers released into the sea were raised by cooperation with the research team led by Prof. Lee Young-don and CR. They were fertilized and spawned in March at JNU’s Marine Science Institute. The size of the fries is about 5-6cm, and larvae were born June 6.
Hong Kong grouper is one of the most valuable fish species among Serranidae in the world. However, its resources have been rapidly decreasing to the point that it has recently been classified as a critically endangered species by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources).
It is the third release of Hong Kong groupers into the sea by Jeju Aquaculture Breed Evaluation Center and Fisheries Corporation CR.
Lee Young-don, the director of the center, said, “with this release, it is expected to increase the income of local fishermen by protecting fish stocks near the waters and restoring them. We plan to carry out releasing consistently to meet the needs of local residents.”
