Jeju National University’s Intellectual Property Education Center (IPEC) held a special lecture to strengthen the intellectual property-related capacity of the university’s faculty and staff members early on Thursday (June 3).

The special lecture was titled, “Intellectual Property and Start-Ups”, with an emphasis on the importance of intellectual properties (IPs) in the era of digitization or the fourth industrial revolution.

Prof. Lee Chul Ung at Korea University was invited to share useful cases and educational courses with JNU faculty and staff, especially in terms of IPs and start-ups. The industrial expert introduced the audience to Korea University’s course, “Invention and Start-Ups”, addressing the recent trends and issues of South Korea’s start-ups and their patents, IPs-related disputes, and possible fund-raising options for start-ups.

After giving the lecture, he discussed case examples by college. The discussion session inspired the audience to request an additional lecture on the strategies to protect IPs and the valuation of technologies. The participants also expressed their willingness to use the lecture program in starting their own businesses, conducting joint research with companies, making patent applications, and more.

Kim In-jung, director of the IPEC, revealed that the center plans to discover timely topics this year to offer useful programs that are tailored to the needs of the university’s faculty as well as students.
