Historical truth of Jeju 4·3 and values of reconciliation and mutual existence shared

Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation held a lecture on the history and values of Jeju 4·3 for Jeju National University students on June 23 and 24.

The first day of the event featured Bishop Kang U-il in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Cheju, who gave a special lecture with the title, “What does 4·3 mean to us today?”

On the following day, a renowned history educator Choi Tae-sung was invited to teach the students about what should be remembered about Jeju 4·3.

Eighty of the participants listened to the lectures at Jeju National University and the other 150 people participated in the event online.

Song Seok-on, president of Jeju National University, expected that the lecture program will help raise attention and awareness of JNU students concerning the history of Jeju 4·3. The university will continue to work together with the Jeju 4·3 Peace Foundation to organize educational events, he added.

The school authority said a “book concert” of Jang Kang-myeong and a historical site tour are slated to be held with the theme of Jeju 4·3 in September and October, respectively.
