Renowned historian invited to talk about arithmetic history in Korea

Jeju National University’s Research Institute for Basic Science (JNU-RIBC) invited a renowned historian for the 5th round its public lecture series, the university announced on Friday (June 25).
The lecture event was held in the audiovisual room of Halla Library, featuring Lee Gwangyeon, professor of Hanseo University.
Lee’s lecture was given with the topic of “Mathematics found in the Korean history”. He especially addressed the audience about the Go game and artificial intelligence, the numeral system in the Goryeo era, the introduction of the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to Korea, and Sansul Sinseo, a mathematics textbook compiled by Lee Sang-seol.
Since its establishment, the JNU-RIBC has worked to educate talented basic scientists and run reach-out programs for Jeju residents. The research institute also cooperates with Halla Library in organizing the lecture event to better appeal to the public.
JNU-RIBC plans to invite physicist Lee Kong-ju-bok, professor of Ewha Womans University, for the next round of its program on August 25.
