2021 Local Community Contribution Festival held 9 colleges invited to discuss environmental conservation and economic revitalization

Jeju National University LINC+ held the 2021 Local Community Contribution Festival on June 24 and 25, along with its side event, the 4th Local Community Contribution Ideathon. The theme was “Jeju for Cleanness and Coexistence - Revitalizing local economy using clean nature and tourism”.

Jeju National University invited as co-organizers 9 other implementers of the state-led industry-academy cooperation promotion program, LINC+, including: Kyungnam University, Keimyung University, Dongguk University, Dongseo University, Daejeon University, Chung-ang University, Chungnam National University, Honam University, and Hallim University.

To follow the national social distancing guidelines, the event was held in five different villages distributed in the northern and southern parts of Jeju Island.

On the first day, the universities conducted research and took field tours of the villages they were allocated to, after which they communicated with activists from the villages to suggest solutions to any problems that were found.

The second-day program started at KAL Hotel in Seogwipo City, featuring presentations given by each university. Chung-ang University’s Sunurang Team (advised by Prof. Bae Yong-jin) was awarded the grand prize for proposing the contribution to Gasi-ri in Pyseon-myeon by revitalizing the Pony Museum.

Kang Chul-ung, head of JNU LINC+, said the ideathon was first held last year to form a network of universities where local issues and development are pondered upon together. This year’s ideathon was impressive as students proposed innovative ideas to revitalize local communities and boost local economic growth, he added.
