JNU designated as ‘Open-Lab’ incubating project implementer Excellency in Stage-1 operation recognized, State-2 to focus on commercializing technologies

Jeju National University’s Stage-1 operation of the state-led Open Lab Incubating Project has been recognized for its excellency, the university announced on Tuesday (July 13).
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Commercialization Promotion Agency for R&D Outcomes (COMPA) recently reviewed the project’s Stage-1 operation by the 12 university operators.
Based on the review, the science ministry and agency announced six of them, including Jeju National University, as the Stage-2 operators of the project.
The Open Lab Incubating Project aims to provide customized technologies and human resources of universities to local industries by running the schools’ laboratories as “Open Labs”.
With the latest designation, JNU will build six “Open Labs” in cooperation with other institutes, such as Jeju TechnoPark, Jeju Regional Intellectual Property Center, and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology’s Jeju headquarters.
During the Stage-1 operation of the project, the school established the portfolio on the constitution and operation of the “Open Labs” as well as the creation of network of industry-academic cooperation.
Launching the Stage-2 project, the school plans to transfer technologies to local businesses through Research and Business Development (R&BD), provide support for start-ups, and incubate specialized human resources.
The national government will allocate 600 million won for the project’s full-year operation, after which the school’s operability in the ensuing stage will be determined after another review.
JNU’s six “Open Labs” will be associated with the businesses that specialize in bio-health materials, functional foods and beverages, Jeju’s native microorganisms, fish seedlings, anti-fibrogenic new drugs, and maritime big data.
Doh Yang-hoi, head of the university’s Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, said the school will work to build an exemplary model for strengthening the competitive edge of local strategic industries and creating quality jobs.
