International conference held to discuss roles of religion and peace in times of crises Researchers specializing in the study of religion meet online and offline

Jeju National University’s Institute of Peace Studies (JNU-IPS) held the 3rd Annual Conference of the East Asian Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, the institute announced on Wednesday (July 21).

From July 17 to 19, JNU-IPS joined forces with the East Asian Society of Scientific Study of Religion (EASSSR), and the Korean Association for the Sociology of Religion (KASR) to co-host the conference at the university’s College of Humanities II.

During the event, some 80 researchers from different parts of the world gathered online and offline to discuss the conference theme, “Religion and Peace in East Asia: The Roles of Religion in Times of Crises”.

JNU-IPS planned and managed the detailed operation of the conference, while controlling the hybrid meeting conditions and broadcasting the sessions live on YouTube and Facebook.

The sessions introduced and shared the latest research outcomes and trends concerning the religions and peace issues in East Asia. The presentations allowed in-depth discussions on the roles of religion in times of global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and global warming.

The first-day program included the Special Jeju Session which featured the presentations given by Jeju National University’s researchers in the Departments of Sociology, History, and Korean Language and Literature, as well as the Multidisciplinary Postgraduate Program of Korean Studies.
