JNU, SKKU and Jejudo Sign MOU to Launch Innovative Education Platform

JNU is drawing attention for its decision to focus on attracting "Learncation" (a combination of Learning + Vacation), signaling a major shift in the educational paradigm.

On December 11, 2024, JNU, Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province signed a business agreement to establish an educational innovation cooperation system at JNU's Digital Library.

The event was attended by Jeju Governor Oh Young-hun, JNU President Kim Eel-hwan, SKKU President Yoo Ji-beom, along with various officials and JNU students. With this agreement, the three organizations aim to collaborate closely to create new growth engines in the Jeju region and strengthen the foundation for sustainable development.

JNU announced that the core of this MOU is the "Learncation" program, designed to foster Jeju as a hub for global educational innovation. Learncation is a new educational paradigm that combines "learning" and "vacation." It is considered an innovative model that maximizes Jeju's unique environmental strengths. Participating students will have the opportunity to enjoy Jeju's natural beauty and cultural experiences while earning credits for the summer or winter semester.

In particular, JNU plans to lead the innovation of Learncation education by building a 7,900-square-meter "Glocal Learncation Center." The university will offer a range of programs that allow students to experience and learn about Jeju’s culture and nature, while also inviting world-class scholars to conduct colloquium lectures.

SKKU plans to develop an educational and cultural exchange platform for both domestic and international students by integrating the Learncation program with its International Summer Semester (ISS). The ISS, held every summer, is expected to serve as a catalyst for accelerating the internationalization of education in Jeju, positioning the region as a birthplace for global talent development.

At the event, Jeju Governor Oh Young-hun emphasized, "Learncation will be an innovative model that will drive Jeju’s education and become a new engine for regional development.“

JNU President Kim Eel-hwan added, "JNU plans to elevate Learncation to the next level, creating a learning environment where not only Korean students but also foreign students and researchers can earn credits, achieve research results, and rejuvenate themselves in a unique setting."
