The Jeju RIS Youth-led Learncation Revitalization Project has been successfully completed.
The project was designed to develop an effective public relations strategy based on a local demand survey from Taiwan, along with the collection of basic data and promotion strategies to revitalize Jeju Learncation.
Jeju Regional Innovation Platform University Education Headquarters (Jeju RIS), led by Director Prof. Kim Dae-young of Jeju National University (JNU), announced the successful completion of the Youth-led Learncation (Learn + Vacation) Promotion JOY Rising Project, held in collaboration with the Jeju Tourism Organization (JTO) since September 2024.
With the rate of revisiting Taiwanese tourists to Korea exceeding the global average and the largest number of Taiwanese visitors to Jeju Island ever recorded in 2024, the project was designed to explore the needs of young Taiwanese people for Jeju Workation and Learncation. It also aimed to develop effective public relations strategies.
Participants from universities in Jeju ran a Jeju tourism promotion booth at the K-Tourism Roadshow in Taiwan in September 2024. Additionally, they conducted a survey on the perception of Workation and Learncation in Jeju. According to the survey, Workation in Jeju has already reached a period of stability.
The survey revealed that 44.5% of respondents expressed interest in participating in Learncation in Jeju in the future, confirming the presence of a potential demand group in Taiwan. Furthermore, education costs and living expenses (46.7%) were the largest considerations for participants in Learncation, followed by accommodation and education-related facilities (18.7%).
Subsequently, the students analyzed the strengths of Jeju’s Learncation by visiting the Sehwa Jilgrang Center in Jeju and the Gangneung Workation Case Site. Based on this analysis, they participated in the Taipei International Travel Fair (ITF) in November 2024, Taiwan's largest tourism fair, where they operated a Jeju Learncation promotion booth. They also surveyed 1,111 young Taiwanese people on their preferences for Learncation classes.
The survey revealed that Taiwanese students have high interest in cultural experiences (382 respondents), history (351 respondents), water sports (271 respondents), and outdoor sports (107 respondents). Based on these results, the project participants proposed ▲the establishment of a cultural experience program for foreign students, ▲expansion of class hours, ▲operation of Learncation supporters, ▲increased support for education and ▲dormitories at universities, and ▲expansion of cultural experience alliances.
