Postgrad programs on groundwater management agreed to be opened Agreement signed with local government, JPDC and JRI

Jeju Island’s key institutes and governing bodies decided to work together to manage local groundwater properly.

Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (JSSGP) met with Jeju National University (JNU), Jeju Provincial Development Corporation (JPDC), and Jeju Research Institute (JRI) early on Thursday (Aug. 19) to sign a memorandum of understanding on incubating groundwater management experts.

Although most of the local water demands are met by using groundwater, management issues have been raised due to the lack of research findings with the absence of related departments at local colleges.

Under these circumstances, the local administration and the highest education and research institutes decided to open a new postgraduate program for master’s and doctoral degrees in the related field at Jeju National University.

By signing the MOU, the four parties agreed to cooperate for the course’s operation, provide support for human exchanges and programs, and develop and implement training courses.

Specifically, the JSSGP and the JPDC will finance the incubation of specialists, while the JNU will take the responsibility of running the postdoctoral programs specializing in the fields of hydrology, geography, and groundwater quality. JRI will be developing and offering the training programs for groundwater specialists.

During the signing ceremony, Koo Man-seob, the acting governor of the JSSGP, expressed his gratitude to everyone who joined in the provincial efforts to fostering talent for studying the clean resources of Jeju Island. The Jeju Groundwater Research Center was established in October 2020, and the latest quadrilateral agreement is significant in that it will allow the core human resources to grow in the local soil.

Song Seok-eon, the president of the JNU, responded that the MOU was signed with a great joy because the values of Jeju’s precious air and water need to be conserved. The school authorities will spare no effort in educating talented individuals for the proper use and management of Jeju’s groundwater resources, he added.
