The Presidential Council of National University 10 (NU10), a state-level association of South Korea’s key national universities, will hold its 1st Tertiary Education Policy Forum in the 2021 academic year on Thursday (Aug. 26).

The presidents of the nation’s 10 national universities will meet in Yeouido, Seoul, to discuss ‘The Challenges and Future of South Korea’s Tertiary Education’.

The forum was prepared to explore responsive and adaptive measures to the ongoing pandemic, decreasing population, and fourth industrial revolution.

The session speakers will include Song Ho-keun, chair professor at Pohang University of Science and Technology and Cho Youngtae, professor at Seoul National University.

Oh Se-jeong, president of Seoul National University, will chair the panel discussion session, which will invite panelists from different sectors, such as Kang Minjung (lawmaker, Open Democratic Party), Kim Heon-young (president, Kangwon National University), Kwon Soon-ki (president, Gyeongsang National University), Cha Jeong-in (president, Pusan National University), Choi Eun-ok (Higher Education Policy Officer, Ministry of Education), and Ahn Hyeon-sil (Editorial Commissioner, The Korea Economy Daily).

Song Seok-eon, chairman of the Presidential Council of NU10, stressed that the education environment in the nation’s universities has recently entered a new era of dramatic changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges. Under these circumstances, establishing a responsive and adaptive higher education system at a national level is essential to secure national competitiveness, he added.

The forum will be organized by Chonnam National University, and may change its format to a virtual one, considering the nation’s quarantine measures.
